House History Research

Every house has a story

Commission your House History from an experienced professional historian, based in West Sussex.

Terraced house, timber-framed cottage, 1930s semi, Georgian townhouse – they all reflect the lives and times of the people who have lived in them.

A House History can add to the interest and enjoyment of living in your home.   It can also make a very special present for a family member.

Ian’s House Histories concentrate on the human side of a home’s story, although each work also contains an interpretation of the development of the building’s structure.

Your House History will include:

  • information about former inhabitants
  • the development of the house
  • the general history of the area in which it is situated
  • a summary history of the site before the house was built
  • reproductions of historic photographs, plans and maps, where available

You will get a properly researched and written History – not just copies of source materials and a few notes (however, please note that Ian does not make detailed plan drawings).

The cost includes two smartly-presented copies of the House History.   Ian retains copyright of the House History text and his own photos, but additional copies can be supplied at cost plus 10%.

Ian mainly works on House History projects in the West Sussex area, but he is very happy to receive enquiries from further afield.

Two levels of service are offered, but if your house is very big and/or old, it may be necessary to negotiate!   Please allow two months for the completion of your commission.

Please contact Ian to find out more.
